How To Write A Cover Letter For Your Resume

By: Victoria Clarkson

Cover letters are an essential part of a job application. Being typically the first thing a prospective employer will read, they can even be more important than your resume. A good cover letter will contain pertinent information about you and your resume. Just like a resume, several points need to be considered when writing your cover letter.

Cover letters need to be specifically written for the job that is being applied for. Never send a generic cover letter with your resume as this shows that you have not put any effort into your application. A good cover letter will state why you should be considered further for the position and to do this you will need to mention specifics that relate directly to the job being offered.

It is standard practice for resumes to be only a page or two long. A cover letter can then be used to provide your prospective employer with any information that could not be put into your resume. Of course, only include information that is relevant and will help them realize why you are the best person for the job.

A good cover letter is typically only a page long. It needs to be easy to read and should highlight any important skills and experience you have. Remember that your cover letter is what will give your future employer their first impressions about you and as such should succinctly tell them why they should contact you for an interview.

Finally, it is important that your cover letter look professional. If it doesn't an employer may never even read your resume, especially if they receive many applications. You need to use it as a tool to introduce yourself and give your potential employer a reason as to why they should spend more time reading your resume. A good cover letter will work hand in hand with your resume to secure you that next step in the job application process, an interview.
