Job Interview Tips 101

By: El Landers

In this world of fierce job market competition, you should prepare yourself with utmost dedication and discipline to grab your dream job. Getting a shot at a job interview is very difficult and converting that job interview into a job offer is even more difficult. So preparation is the key to success; of course you’ll need the qualifications and talent required and probably a bit of luck too!

Your resume reflects your personality

Preparation for a job interview starts by preparing a perfect resume. Your resume is the document that is going to represent you before a prospective employer and tells the employer who you are, what you can do and how apt you are to succeed in their company. In essence, your resume is your first impression.

If the company feels that you are suited to the requirements of the job, then you will likely be contacted for the job interview. You want to “wow” companies with your resume and be that special individual that they are dying to meet. So, take time to prepare a thorough and captivating resume.

The resume should focus on your qualifications and your key skills (your strengths). It should tell the employer how you can effectively add to their bottom line through your skills. And it should tell the employer how apt you are to the current vacancy.

Highlight your career achievements (make them quantifiable when possible) and achievements in extra circular activities. In today’s job market, any of these differentiating factors can help make the difference between getting the job interview and getting passed over.

Job Interview

If you’ve done a good job preparing your resume, you will more than likely get a call from a prospective employer. Now, this is the “make it or break it step”.

You have to convince the employer that you are the perfect fit for the job and that you are the best among the crowd. It is the biggest hurdle in the job search process and if you do it right, your dream job will be yours.

So, prepare thoroughly for the interview (don’t just glance at your resume while you’re waiting to be called into the office you’re your job interview!). Maintain good dress code. Have a right attitude. Try and lead the interviewer into asking questions that illustrate your strengths.

You want to “wow” them with your presentation and your abilities. When you walk out the door, you want them to think to themselves, “We have to him / her”. If you can do this, then the job is yours…if you decide to take it!

And never forget the job interview follow up. Always send a thank you letter – email or snail mail.

So, take the time to prepare and think about your past achievements, career highlights and anything else that might help you convince an employer that you are, unequivocally, the very best person for the job. Then go ace your job interview.
