Brave, courageous, strong and hard working these are the usual connotations associated with the career of firefighting. These men are dedicated to saving lives and helping people who are in need. The prestige and the respectable reputation that these individuals acquired have been because of their experience and knowledge in their job. It was not done overnight and it involves putting their lives at risk.

Nevertheless, this job is very much fulfilling and rewarding. Firefighters all over the world are proud of the job that they do and are happy to be of service to the people.

If you are interested in the career of firefighting, then you are in for a tough competition. Usually, one opening for a position has five to ten people vouching for it. If you are serious about this, then it would be helpful to always be on the look out for current vacancies. Check your local newspaper for job announcements. You may also explore the possibility of becoming a firefighter in other cities. The internet and job postings may help you get the job that you want.

If you have finally found an opening, fill out an application form. This is available in your local fire department. You may also get the schedule of examinations and interviews from the fire station where you plan to work. Interviews and tests are done weekly for some, others who have more demand for fire fighters may offer dates more often.

Prepare for the examination by studying or reading up on firefighting manuals. You need not buy these books are there available books you can borrow from your local library. There are also resources you can find in the internet. Just brush up on basic knowledge about fire fighting. The exam would take about 3 hours.

Once you have passed the test, you would be referred to take the physical examination. This would simply measure your readiness to be a firefighter. A simulation of an actual fire emergency is usually done wherein you would be given the chance to act like a real firefighter. After this, you would be subjected to a series of psychological evaluation.

Although very worthwhile, the career of firefighting is very crucial and serious. Training, experience and knowledge are very much needed. You would experience loss in the future and unavoidable setbacks. It is better that you are prepared mentally, physically and psychologically for this job.
