As more school districts and recruiters turn to the Internet o search for prospective candidates for hire, it’s more important than ever for job seekers to be “e-mail aware” in their correspondence to those reviewing their teaching resume and cover letter. Tip #1 - Create a professional e-mail address, preferably with some variation of your name in it. This is not the time to e-mail prospective employers from your “hotmama437897@someemailid.com” address, nor should you include this type of casual e-mail address on your resume and cover letter. Tip #2 - When e-mailing your teacher or administrator resume and cover letter to a prospective school district, particularly one who hasn’t asked to receive it (someone you’re e-mailing “cold”), include a text version (.txt or .rtf) in addition to the formatted version (.doc) of both documents. Despite the fact that Microsoft Word is the most common word processing application available today, don’t assume that your reader uses it. Viruses can also be embedded in .doc files, which makes recipients hesitate from opening files from unknown sources. Tip #3 - Check your e-mail. Really. You’d be surprised at how many job seekers set up an e-mail account specifically for their job search and then forget to check it regularly. Tip #4 - If you have included several methods of contact on your teacher resume (e-mail, home phone, cell phone, etc.), don’t assume that your prospective employer will “beat the bushes” and try each of your contact points until he tracks you down. While it’s impossible to make yourself available every minute of the day, be particularly attentive to your voice mail and e-mail during your job search.
